Dance

I've been doing a series of images for the Vermont Performance Lab, who invited three choreographers to do residencies in southern Vermont this summer.

(As always, you can click on any image to enlarge it.)

Candice Salyers teaches dance at Smith College, and does wonderfully thoughtful dance pieces that unfold slowly and beautifully. The venue for this performance is the alley outside the Hooker-Dunham Theater in Brattleboro. As you can see, the light is beautiful.

In this performance, Candace is poking fun at her tendency to feel as though she is under attack as she goes through life.

She realizes that many of the things she worries about are insignificant and pose no real threat to her well-being, much like these little toy soldiers.

Lately she's been wondering whether the things she feels are attacking her have really been sent to protect her.

Candace will be performing this piece next summer in Brattleboro.

This is one of my favorite images. It could be in Europe, or Brattleboro.

In this piece, Candace has written something in chalk on the pavement, and covered it with Valentine's candies.

During the dance, she gently and lovingly gathers the candies into her apron, revealing the message below.

She slowly stands and releases the candies to break on the pavement below.

If you have a chance to come see Candace's performance next summer, it is a thought-provoking and hopeful series that I found mesmerizing.

Thanks for taking the time to look at these images!
